Flashed the stock tune, took it in, they ordered the new cam phaser parts after a tech got to hear the noise in person the next morning. Seemed like it wasn't their first encounter with this issue. Glad I found this thread - I was scared I broke something with my tune.

Im up for round 4 with phasers, 37,000 miles. The decel, lift throttle fast rattle has returned and the truck sounds like a diesel the first few minutes of driving with the windows down. After sitting for four days and starting it sounds hideous. Once the oil warms up it sounds mostly okay, not like it did new or after the replaced everything 15,000 miles ago.

Any word on the TSB and a bona fid fix for this?

I suspect that they left the complete suffix off of the end of the part number when the repair order was written.
Do you know if 2020 units built in 10/2019 contain the updated timing parts? Also fan you shed some light on what appears to be the root cause on the locking pins starting to mess up? Oil viscosity? Mfg tolerance , supplier of metal not within grade , etc? I would like to learn more as there does not seem to be many tear downs and analysis of the specific failure

No one knows the root cause. If they did, then this would have been fixed along time ago.

Do you know if 2020 units built in 10/2019 contain the updated timing parts? Also fan you shed some light on what appears to be the root cause on the locking pins starting to mess up? Oil viscosity? Mfg tolerance , supplier of metal not within grade , etc? I would like to learn more as there does not seem to be many tear downs and analysis of the specific failure

Sorry for the guys with the recent or recurring issues. It does seem like there has been a slow down in reports of later production date issues. Hopefully this bodes well for the future. 38.5k, nada.

Seems crazy they can’t fully resolve it. It appears to have been an issue since 09 with triton 5.4’s

It's been resolved...I have not seen any vehicles after the build date cutoff exhibit the issue in question. This concern is completely unrelated to the 5.4 3V, which had early issues with the VCT system that were resolved with revised VCT solenoids. The most common Ford 3V issues occur on vehicles with higher mileage, and are directly attributed to a lack of maintenance and/or poor quality oil/filters. These engines are extremely sensitive to lubrication quality and filtration; any wear to the cam journals reduces oil pressure to the VCT phasers, causing the PCM to lose control of the timing. Every engine with I've serviced with this issue has scored journals and poor maintenance history. Cheap oil filters are one of the biggest culprits; the filter media breaks down, falls apart, and gets pumped through the oil galleries. When it reaches the heads, it scores the cam journals to the point that they bleed off oil pressure.

Yes. Build date cutoff was 10-Jul-2018. All vehicles after that build date have the updated parts and calibration. I cannot comment on the exact failure mode that caused the issue, as I am not a Ford Engineer. All I can tell you is that the phaser part number and PCM calibration were updated, and I have not seen any concerns on vehicles built after that date.

Yes! mine was a 9/18 build so mine should be in the clear. It's been oh so quiet so far, this is great!!

Good info, i am big on oil quality and filters , fram has a terrible rep (orange cheapo cans) but the fram ultras are well made with a very good filter media but they lack the proper no dirty oil bypass that the OE motorcraft has. In fact many aftermarket filters lack this additional stack of hardware but its very important to not bypass thru the dirty side of the filter. So redline oil and oem MC filters for me. If you do learn of the root cause of the phaser issues i would love to know. How do you feel about the low 20’s psi oil pressure the raptors run when not under positive manifold pressure? Seems a bit low for my liking combined with the start stop business.
