So I got the Cam Phazer Recall letter from Ford today.

what i understand,from my technician:
if you have no rattle you still have to do 21B10
if you have rattle also 21N03 and 21N08.
No modded.
Not correct. Every vehicle included in the affected VIN range needs 21B10. Program 21N03 is for vehicles outside of powertrain warranty coverage. 21N08 is only for vehicles that experience a shudder after 21B10.

I'm getting all the "recalls" addressed in a couple of weeks --- including the cam phaser software. I dont have any issues yet. '18 with only 11k though. We will see what happens

How significant of an issue is the rattle on the engine / performance overall?

I thought I may be experiencing this. I run a Cobb tune but haven’t updated the Cobb accessport / engine management in months.

Is there a new version / update out that would make sense to use / run? Does it address this issue if it’s a part of the computer flash?

I don’t seem to notice the noise when I uninstall the tune. Anyone else having similar issues or have answers to my questions?

Either you have the rattle at cold start or not.

Mine developed at roughly 41K, I am currently at 42K. It only manifests itself in my truck after letting it sit for a week or two, then only on the first start for 3 seconds or so..........It sounds like a diesel engine then runs and performs flawlessly.

Mine also doesn't do it consistently, I wasn't going to bother with doing anything with it as it is just an intermittent noise for 3 seconds at startup. I got the letter this week and figure I'll give it a shot. I'm certainly not rushing to the dealer today.

It’s just a noise, doesn’t impact performance. If you’re unsure if you have it or if changing your tune affects it, you don’t have the issue. It’s a very distinct and audible noise and will not change with an aftermarket tune.

You’ll want to reach out to your tuner for further direction.

I have a 2019 and run a gearhead tune, excellent tune by the way. I return it to factory tune, had Ford do the phaser update. Sent the new info to gearhead and they wrote me a new tune. Runs great.

Is there a build date it applies to / prior to? I have a 2020 built in November 2019. I didn’t get a recall notice that I know of, but also am not at the address the car is registered at so I’m unsure. The Ford pass app doesn’t show the recall on it- at least as of yet.

As you mention, 21B10 will not induce a phaser rattle. It’s simply a new calibration to prevent the issue from occurring. Not sure where people find this misinformation!
The letter from Ford states "In rare instances, some vehicles will experience an engine shudder after reprogramming the PCM with the 21B10 update. Ford Motor Company will provide a no-cost, one-time repair under program 21N08 to return the vehicle's PCM to the prior calibration."

Mine had the shudder after the update. Ford then returned it back to original tune. Never had a cam phaser rattle before or after the update. Fingers crossed.

Echo many on here.

Got the notice on the FordPass App first. Did the update back in August. Had no issues before and don't have any issues after update.

Same for my Wife's 2018 Navigator, got a letter from Lincoln as well. Updated in August. No Issues.
