My son got a 2010 with the Sony system. It has the single line digital readout, not sure if that's all that was available that year. Anyway, I would like to install a new head unit with a built in back up cam and screen before he backs into my Raptor.

Everything seems to work but the buttons are rubbed off pretty well. Any recommendations on an aftermarket unit? Better, or even possible to install a Ford screen/unit?

Thanks for any ideas.

I've been going through a similar situation but i have a 2011 with an 8in screen. Looks like crutchfield has a dash kit that would fit your sons truck. You'd also need the maestro kit to keep all the steering wheel controls as well as other controls on the screen. I just bought a receiver and have all the integration parts so i'll post up how the install goes and hopefully it looks clean.

I finished step one of my stereo install and test fit the new receiver and surprisingly it looks pretty good and everything went smooth. Below is what i bought and followed the instructions from the video. A few things to note, you do not need to remove the brackets from the OEM stereo, only the brackets from the screen. There were 2 little indents on my OEM brackets that didn't let it sit flush on the new brackets so i filed them off to get a cleaner fit. You will need to trim some of the upper sub dash as the instructions say and you will have to cut out 2 fasteners but there are 2 upper ones that do a more than adequate job of holding everything secure. the new receiver is only held in place with 2 screws and i was a little worried this wouldn't be enough but it feels pretty solid when i put everything back. I may try to get 2 more screws in the receiver since i have the nut inserts and screws from the location i had to cut out from sub dash. I forgot to take pics before i started cutting but you can just look at your dash and compare to what i did. I still need to get the wire harness connected and make all the connections but at least i know the stereo will physically fit in the dash and look fairly clean. FYI this is a 6.75" screen and there are models with a 10.1" screen that use the same dash kit so i'm not sure how that actually fits since my OEM screen is only 8" I'll keep you posted on the wiring and if everything still works as it should. After watching the videos all the buttons and functions should work as well as some extra features since its plugged into the OBD ports. This will be a nice upgrade for us SYNC 1 guys that don't have much options for upgrades.

it does look a little tilted but i'll try to fix that when i do the finish install.

Left side with the fastener already cut out. I just used a razor knife and some side cutters to cut the plastic.

Receiver is only held in by the upper screws but there is a lower hole in the bracket and a corresponding hole in the dash trim so using the 2 new nut inserts might be possible.

Looks good. Our didn't come with nav though, just the screen.

Look great! I haven't seen too many Gen-1s with replacement stereos and compelled to ask why did you replace it? Did your original unit fail? I know in due time more & more folks will upgrade; however, the OEM unit with the integration of the controls is something I like a lot and not having to rely on the hard buttons. Not mention some other stuff that I think aftermarket will never be able to fully replace.

I find it interesting that even with the manufacturer extended warranty would not cover the OEM nav unit and most of the ones that contacted me won't either. However, knock on wood, 11yrs later still working great.

I got my new receiver installed and for the most part it went well. Steering wheel controls and climate buttons all work. One issue i had was the sub woofer connection. There were some rca cables on the idata link wire harness but the other end wouldn’t connect to anything on the factory harness. There was one plug that was close and had the same number of pins but male plug was too big. I did cut the aftermarket plug to get it to physically connect but still no sub woofer sound. I’m going to be replacing the sub and factory amp as well as adding a sound processor so i can go a few weeks with no bass. I did realize i didn’t have the OBD plugged in and i heard if you don’t plug that in you could have issues with speakers not working. Not sure what that has to do with anything but that’s what crutchfield said when i asked if that was necessary. It’s kind of cool to see some vehicle info on the screen but I’ll never use it. I really like having car play though and I’m sure once i play with it I’ll find more goodies. But for now it plays music and has navigation so I’m happy. It also looks nice and clean
