Let's be real about it ... Should I just trade for a 250?

I'm not 100% sure on the specs, tbh. It was a rental from a private owner. Originally I wanted their 21' unit, but it wound up having a wheel bearing problem, when I returned it they let me have their 23' unit instead, plus they threw in a generator for free. All told...3500# or so?? I didn't weigh it, to my regret. The Raptor tends to run pretty rich when you're in the boost to keep the turbos cool, so that can tank mileage pretty quick. I could definitely feel it behind me, but never did I feel like I didn't have enough truck to handle it. A weight-distributing hitch can go a long way to making eh ride more comfortable for you and the truck as well. You pointed out all the advantages of a 250. If you're at GVWR on the Raptor, and decide to tow, you'll need to move cargo to the trailer, but still stay below the GCWR, which might be a further limitation. Maybe a 250 Tremor would be more to your liking. I read the comment earlier about the 6.7 diesel being a good choice in their opinion, and they do have a certain appeal. If you gut a good one, your probably set for whatever you'd tow...1000+ ft-lbs of torque after all...but if you get one with issues it can be one headache after another troubleshooting them. Although, if you're going to get a 250, maybe consider going all the way up to 450...not for cargo/towing capacity, but with the wider front axle on the 450's you cut down your turning radius, and if you do go into the boonies that is a consideration.

If you have a good relationship with your Ford dealer (Curious who you bought from), they may let you take a diesel on an extended test drive over a weekend, that would give you a chance to really get to know if it's right for you or not (comfort, size, features, etc). Probably not the exact one you want (nor a Tremor) but enough to give you a solid idea of what you'd be getting. Last thing I'd want to see is that you pull the trigger, then some time later have buyers' remorse and miss the Raptor.

I don't know that I really have any relationship with my dealer. I got it from Evergreen and I don't think I'd ever buy another car from them again. I went with them only because they were the only place I could find in a multi-state radius that had what I was looking for (a fully optioned Raptor without a sunroof) and I just feel like they were trying to screw me around the whole time. Just didn't leave me with a good experience. And then the finance guy was the worst part of the whole experience.

Ah well, whatever.

Where'd you get yours?

Why are you looking at 250s and not a 150? it doesn't sound like you need the 250s capabilities. Really sounds like any 4WD truck will do, so if deciding between Raptor and 250, it's not a matter of need but want.
agreed..it doesn't sound to me like you need a 250. You should be good with 4wd

Lakewood Ford. The had exactly (not close, exactly) what I wanted, down to color and options. It was a leftover '17, and they had '18's coming in, so they were willing to come significantly down from the $10K added dealer profit sticker they had on it. Although, since I drove it off the lot I haven't been back there, so I wouldn't consider myself as having a 'relationship' w/them either. Sometimes ppl do work w/a dealer or salesman for several deals over many years...I'm not like that. Buy once, pay it off and drive it till it dies (though my Tacoma w/185K when I sold it was still running strong, it just wasn't enough truck, or comfortable enough any longer).

Have you asked your question on any of the SD forums, to see if anyone has outfitted a SD 250 the way you're thinking, and how it's worked out for them?

I am thinking about an Off-road trailer

I knew when I bought the Raptor that payload would be an issue. The offroad trailer is my backup plan. I just saw that Morris has closed. The Mule was top of my list for a basic small trailer that could handle tougher terrain than I'm willing to drive.

My concern about those little trailers is that someone would just take it if I left it parked somewhere ...

I suppose they could do that with anything but it seems easier when it's so small and light.

I also hesitate to spend so much money on something I have to setup in the rain and snow ...

I think would be more cost effective to just get the right leaf/spring setup on Raptor to accommodate payload.

On other hand you could always bring a heavy duty chain & lock & secure the trailer that way if you were to leave it alone. Sure- someone could torch the chain or saw down the tree it’s attached too....but I mean someone could also hitch up to your Raptor & tow it away if they’re that motivated lol

That's a cute one with the short bed. I'm surprised how many recommendations there are here for F150's. Besides the Raptor, I would never consider an F150, as they just aren't capable of real towing or hauling.

F350 4x4 CC LB diesel is a great truck all around. I'm considering an F450 for the next purchase, though the width of a dually is limiting.

Hardo of the year award!

standard F150 & 1/2 ton trucks are capable of towing up to 13k give or take & can carry upwards of 2300 in bed. That’s plenty capable. The Raptor is 20-25% shy of those figures but can be outfitted to match w/ the right stuff.

At boat launch yesterday here on cape saw a guy pulling a 24’ Scarab CC out the water w/ a ******** Audi Q7 non-diesel

a lot of the boats an F350 is rated to tow are oversized for the road (too wide) in first place.

I see WAY more people utilizing 50-80% of their trucks ability in a 1/2 ton vs. many people owning heavy duty trucks & barely using/taxing em.

Don’t get me wrong - HD trucks absolutely have their benefits- but some of them & many people (maybe yourself included) do “need” one. Unless I was towing 10k+ regularly, putting crushed stone in bed, & plowing- I just don’t see the need, personally.

I do however understand the “want”
I would want a fully loaded HD truck lifted 2-3” on 35”s w/ a plow hookup, tuned & deleted - yeah sure sign me up lol!

You wouldn't want a ball hitch for offroading and the others are much less common. One of the others is the old pintle hitch and I don't remember what the other one is called. Between a weird hitch, a lock to deal with, and the potential for you to return while they're messing with your stuff, you've made it much less attractive. I'd worry more about trailer theft when it's parked behind my house ...

20-25% off 13k is 10.4 - 9.7k, or about 10k. 20-25% off 2300 is 1840 - 1625, or about 1750. The Raptor isn't anywhere near that.
