Cam Phaser/Engine Failure Reports

and what is even more strange is that most dealers do not have these parts in stock, they order them. So why would dealerships order the old parts? Why are old parts even available? You would think the old parts are no longer order-able or that the system just knows to sends the new parts.

How do you know most dealers were ordering the old parts? That’s an incorrect assumption. Dealers can source parts from other D2D or from FADs.

In regards to the new part numbers, those are the ones that need to be ordered from Ford.

My wife's 2018 Lariat had the phaser issue and went into the shop on 7/11/2019. None of the parts ended in D. It took them 1 month to get the parts in. Were the new parts ending in D available in July 2019?

I don’t have any specific dates of when the CD parts were available to order. If C was all that was available at that time, they may have ordered C level. However, since every dealer uses different billing systems, some cut off the D at the end of the part numbers. If you DM me the VIN I can tell you for sure which part numbers were installed.

Those are the old part numbers on that invoice. That is why you have had a repeat failure.

Why not just have them fix it with the new parts instead of taking the loss on a repurchase?

I don’t feel I really took much loss on the repurchase. I paid MSRP for my ‘17.
Ford gave me all my money back minus usage for the 19k miles when the first failure happened.
I was able to buy a ‘20 for approx 6k below MSRP.

Only thing I miss is the Ingot silver.

Let me rephrase. You have been telling people of the CD cutover date for a while. Was that date not right? Just wanted to know what the cutover was.
From what I gather the new parts were available 4/19 but if dealers were ordering from other suppliers they could have received the old parts. I'm pretty sure there is no cut and dry date because of all the factors mentioned above.

As a recent owner of a 2018, this thread has been of interest to me, and I’ve spent the last week or so reading through almost all of the 1400 posts. As of now, I do not have this issue. (10,800 miles)

I apologize in advance if my question is ignorant or I am missing something but let me see if I understand this....

The phaser issue, If present does not have an adverse affect on performance. (No reduction in HP, millage, etc)

The phaser issue does not put the engine at risk for damage, or breakage. (Cams won’t slip, valves won’t slap pistons, etc)

The primary problem is the noise at start up, which goes away in a short time.

So if the above is correct (and I apologize of it is not) then why not just leave it alone and avoid having your truck torn into?

It seems one would risk a bigger problem, not to mention the days without your truck. Almost seems like the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

Please help me understand what am I missing?

I’ve always wondered - if the phaser park issue that is the topic of discussion of this thread and many more here does not put other components at risk, why does Ford replace the cams, sprockets and such for an affected vehicle?

Maybe it’s just an abundance of caution?

It is pretty embarrassing when you start it. Also mine started to sound like a Diesel engine.
