Update: one of the VCTs is stuck; not sure about collateral damage; they've torn everything down and are still diagnosing the exact cause and other potential problems
Thanks for the update. Hopefully not too much collateral damage, and they’ll get you back on the road soon.

I have no idea what u are referring to. First go around I found this thread or one similar referring to the issue I was having. I printed out the pages that referenced what other had done and presented them to the service manager telling him this is my problem. They agreed. Replaces cams and tensioner pulley etc. Second go around I was really surprised have this happen again. When I spoke to dealer they told me there was newer parts to fix this issue. Was a pain to get Ford to agree to fix again even though it was making noises again. There was really no reason for me to post anything on here as reading on here you can find out pretty much everything you want to know.
My post today was should I just move on or has this been resolved with newer parts? Next time I will just read all 141 pages of posts before I ask a question.

Don’t let these guys get to you. They are just trying to weed out a troll. Post up a pic of your truck or repair invoice, that could help.

I also had three failures on my ‘17 at 19k, 30k and 34k.
After they started making noise again at 34k I called Ford customer service and ended up getting a buy back in early Feb. 20.

I took the cash and bought a ‘20. Love it so far.

It was definitely after April 2019. I was told by the service rep that they (Ford) had made changes and updated parts specifically to fix this issue.

The Service Message was not released until October 18th 2019. That means for repairs performed before that date, the dealer may have sourced the original part numbers instead of the updated ones.

OK I guess an important distinction here. So even though the new parts were out in 4/19, trucks in for repair for the issue may have received the old parts all the way up until 10/19? That would be a huge fail or Ford's part if that is the case - imagine knowing that you are repairing vehicles with known bad parts...

Here is my invoice from 5/19 this was the second time they were replaced and these failed a little over four thousand miles later for the third time .

Dealer confirmed third failure but I didn’t have them fixed, I asked for a buyback instead.

Those are the old part numbers on that invoice. That is why you have had a repeat failure.

Why not just have them fix it with the new parts instead of taking the loss on a repurchase?

No, that’s a failure on the dealer’s part to order the superseded part number in the catalog. Many dealers use aftermarket parts catalogs (cheaper) instead of Ford Ecat; those aftermarket parts catalogs are often not as accurate and up to date as Ecat.

Sorry but when I say Ford, I include the dealers in there. How can you not? And, Ford should have sent a memo or whatever that new phaser parts are available please make sure to get them and send us any old phaser parts you have.

and what is even more strange is that most dealers do not have these parts in stock, they order them. So why would dealerships order the old parts? Why are old parts even available? You would think the old parts are no longer order-able or that the system just knows to sends the new parts.

makes no sense

Dealers are independently owned and operated franchises. Their lobby groups are very powerful and fight hard to keep it that way. Because of that, manufacturers have little direct control regarding what dealers do on a daily basis. It is the dealer’s responsibility to install the correct parts.

We can speculate all day on what should or shouldn’t have happened. The bottom line is the updated parts are available to resolve the concern.
