GEN 2 Vehicle registration in Florida for your Raptor

My registrations are coming due for my vehicles, I noticed the date on my truck was different than my birthday.. I did a little research to find this. If you read, it shows that all vehicles over 5,000 pounds have a registration renewal date of 12/31/**, new to bigger trucks thought this may help a few OCD people like myself that want to have all details squared away!

When do I have to renew my tags?
Florida license tags can be renewed up to three months prior to expiration. There is no grace period for the renewal of license tags in the State of Florida. This means tags will expire at midnight on the expiration date listed on the registration card. You can get an expired tags ticket (costing between $120 to $150 on average) the day after the listed expiration date on the registration card.

If registered in the name of person, the expiration date is the first listed owner’s birthday. If registered to a business, the expiration date will be the the same month and day it was first registered. Beyond that, there are other factors that may effect the expiration date including the vehicles weight. As an example, regardless of whether the vehicle is registered to a person or business, the expire date of a vehicle over 5,000 pounds will be December 31st.

I found that out when I purchased my '17 a week ago- I remember telling the dealer they had the tag date wrong- it is then they told me what you said-

5,000 pounds- renewal date of 12/31/ - its only a month earlier than my Birthday month- so there's that-

I am not sure about 5000 lb only. I have a 6500lb gx460 that is on birthdate too. I think it is trucks for some reason over 5k maybe. My last couple have been at 12/31 trucks only

My renewal is for my DOB and I live in Orange County. They did not ask for vehicle weight or usage. I think the 5000+ lbs is mostly geared for commercial usage

Why birthday date? In Arizona it’s a year after you buy it and it’s about 900 dollars

Its the width of the vehicle that causes that. Since the Raptor is over the width of most passenger vehicles it fall into the commercial class. Kinda shocked me that they don't require a CDL but since they didn't and I retired I got rid of mine.

Its about 2% of MSRP 1st year then 2% of wholesale bluebook 11 months after purchase date then declines each year on aniversary date of 1st registration unti it hits minimum in like 20 years. My 2017 802A Screw is still $800!

Before this thread get's too carried away with theories, let me add my two cents based on my career as a State Trooper in Orlando, Florida for 13 years.

First, know that the Florida Highway Patrol is a Division of the state's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. (Otherwise known as FL DHSMV).

The Florida Highway Patrol is the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles enforcement arm for ALL of the law's defined in Title XXIII.

The GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) is a MAJOR factor that determines your Registrations expiration date.

FSS 320.055 Registration periods; renewal periods.—The following registration periods and renewal periods are established:
(5) For a vehicle subject to nonapportioned registration under s. 320.08(4), (5)(a)1., (6)(b), or (14), the registration period begins December 1 and ends November 30. The renewal period is the 31-day period beginning December 1. (The Ford Raptor falls under FSS 320.08(4) and unless you use the Raptor Commercially it is NONAPPORTIONED)

FSS 320.08 License taxes:
(4) HEAVY TRUCKS, TRUCK TRACTORS, FEES ACCORDING TO GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT.—
(a) Gross vehicle weight of 5,001 pounds or more, but less than 6,000 pounds: $60.75 flat.
(b) Gross vehicle weight of 6,000 pounds or more, but less than 8,000 pounds: $87.75 flat.


The GRW of my 2019 fully loaded Raptor is 7050 which falls under FSS 320.08(4)(b) Gross vehicle weight of 6,000 pounds or more, but less than 8,000 pounds.

Therefore, the registration for my 7050 lb Raptor Expires Midnight December 31st.

Five years ago, the State of Florida turned ALL of the Tag and Driver Licensing Offices in the state over to the individual Counties. Before that they were run by State Employee's. Now they're run by County Employee's and I can tell you that they make A LOT of mistakes that State Employee's knew better than to make.

Does it really matter if your tag expires midnight on your birth date or midnight December 31st? Nope.

Is the average COP going to know the difference? Nope. They're just going to make sure it's not expired.

Bottom line is this. If you have a privately owned vehicle with a GVW greater than 5,000 lbs, then it SUPPOSED to expire December 31st. Does it really matter if it doesn't? Nope. The State will make sure it gets it's money one way or another and that's all the State and Counties really care about.

When I bought my 2013 F150 Platinum the tag renewal was Dec then when I bought my 2015 Platinum F150 it went to my birthday (Jan) so no big deal. When I got the Raptor it went right back to December. The registration is so cheap in FL I don’t really care either way, I just pay for 2 years and forget until I get a remainder.

I could have sworn when I read my level truck said gvwr was around 5500lb.
