u joint failing?

The stock GM joints are glued in.

Be careful with the torch and don't go overboard, it's not too hard to explode the caps off.

Strength-wise, a sealed unit is slightly better because having the fitting creates a small weak point; as well as potential dirt intrusion (vs. sealed).

Nope these weren't the nylon sealed u joints. Just snap rings. Put it in the vice and popped the caps right off. It was the rear that was bad. Replaced with a greasable one so it should last longer.

Mad, if the truck's lifted, watch out for clearance on the zerks when in full rotation. I learned the hard way in my first 78 Bronco after the lift, I sheared off 3 grease nipples driving 10 feet due to the angle change...
