Ford Dealership is saying my truck will need a new engine.

Brought my truck in last week for rattle during cold start, they changed oil and filter saying that aftermarket filters can rattle. They kept my truck overnight, cold started it in the morning, technician reported no more rattle.

I took the truck home, very next day I cold started it, boom rattle still there. I was video tapping this very first cold start cause I did not believe an oil filter would cause the rattle.

Called dealership and they said to bring the truck in, truck was kept over night so they can cold start it in the morning. This time they hear the noise and service advisor called me and said my truck will need a new engine and that the bearings in lower end are bad.
Truck was at Ford maybe 6 or so months ago for cam phasers and now this.

Truck is 2018 with 43k miles on it.

Has anyone else had this happen?
What can I do or should be done?

Just irritated that the truck is basically 2 years old with all these engine issues. And I’m guessing in 17k more miles the truck will be out of power train warranty?

Thanks in advance.

A faulty oil filter anti-drain back valve can most definitely result in an engine noise on cold start. This is most common with economy and mid-grade aftermarket oil filters. The noise is the result of the engine being starved for oil on startup due to the filter allowing all of the oil to drain back to the pan. The noise appears as a clicking/clattering from the valvetrain, somewhat different from a cam phaser noise.

It sounds like the lower bearing diagnosis was nothing more than a bad guess by the dealer. As Truckasaurus said, it sounds like you got the old phaser part number installed during the last repair. The phasers have since been redesigned and have a new part number.

That's really sucks, I`m fearful of having issues with my 18 as well. I have read on this forum and seen where people have used a N gauge to show the oil pressure difference at cold start.

One noted thing to try was to floorboard the gas pedal and let it crank for 3-5 seconds, it will not start while doing this but it will build up oil pressure, after 3-5 seconds of cranking lift your foot off the pedal and let it start and see if your noise is still there. From what I read if it goes away it your cam phaser, if not it could be a wastegate rattle or something major like the members above have posted.
Let us know what you find out and good luck

I’ll look into what parts were used the first cam phaser change and post it here.

I believe the new engine was a guess by the dealer and when I called today to drill them with questions about the engine change they stated it’s the cam phasers.

Thanks for the help and advice. I’ll post part numbers used soon.

I've seen several posts here with similar issues with 17s and 18s and cases where Ford has purchased the truck back. Id take them up on the new engine offer.

Buybacks are miserable, I have personal experience. Took 6 months in loaner vehicles and literally talking with various ford departments damn near everyday to push the rope. In the end, they gave me a good deal but its grueling.

I’m starting to get a lil rattle on startup 2018 w/ 26k miles, due for an oil change has 6k on the oil now, doing it this week, I’m guessing it’s the phasers seeing if it goes away w/ fresh oil.

not 10000% concerned unless it’s gets really loud, lasts longer, and/or does it every time (which isn’t the case yet) - my understanding is this is basically a mostly “aesthetic”
Issue & that there’s no real damage being done by letting it go for a while.
