Where are the hookers and blow?

Haha... Umm, the wife wouldn't approve?

Thoughnim not sure how much she approves of the mountain of stuff I have in the garage either but I told her I keep my cars for 10-15 years so I seriously mod them and then leave it be for the most part. I think she bought that..

Big Green, what are you being quoted for your wrap? I'm trying hard not to get my truck wrapped when it shows up. A shop here in Fairbanks uses 3M matte black wrap and quoted me $3500-4000. There's a shop in Anchorage that uses the X-PEL stuff, but I haven't talked with them yet.

They must be the only people in town doing it, which wouldn't surprise me. It is about 1600.00 here. That 3M wrap is the best imo. That 12 hour trip each way to Anchorage wouldn't be worth it to save a few thousand dollars though when you include the time, hotel, gas needed..unless you turned it into some sort of trip for other than just the wrap.

$1600 for the 3M wrap or the X-PEL? Now you have me questioning my quote. The X-PEL is a paint protecting film which is quite a bit thicker than the 3M vinyl wrap. From what I can tell it's far more expensive to get so I expected more cost up front.

Yoda - He's charging me $3800 which was within the realm of reality from what I could tell.. This is a tiny town where he's the only guy doing this kind of work and he's right across the street so I can walk home when I drop it off. So unless I want to drive to Philly or D.C. to get it done, he's my only good option, thankfully, he's super professional and because he's so good, all the high end cars (Lambos, Ferraris, Etc..) all come through his shop. All the other places would necessitate me getting a hotel or renting a car to drive back here since the closest ones are about 2 to 2.5 hours away and it takes 2 - 3 days to get it done.

The guy ballparked those figures based on a $15/sqft rate. So, if anyone knows the surface area of the truck, that'd help me out. There is one other shop in town, but I don't think they do full wraps. Not that I've talked with the second shop since the online reviews for them are scathing.

The trip to Anchorage is only about 6.5 hrs one way and that doesn't bother me. Especially with my new truck! Besides, it gets me out of Fairbanks and I can make a long weekend out of it.:peace:

$1600 does sound like a steal. If it cost that little, I wouldn't have second thoughts about doing this.

Thanks for the info, Big Green. I'm a bigger fan of the X-PEL for a couple of reasons. The main one is the protection and "self-repair" capabilities of it. The second is that it uses the trucks own paint as the color basis and then stealthifies it. I'm going to call the X-PEL dealer tomorrow and see what they say.

Let me know what you find out.. Good luck.

As for the part that I highlighted, you should know that my guy explained to me that the self healing technology is actually only a part of their glossy film. The stealth film does not have that property since it's a layer that is added to the film and as of now, it's only available in the gloss finish.. not sure of the science behind that but he explained it fairly well and in depth. He does a TON of X-PEL instals.

I'd still be interested in what you find out from the company itself. I was definitely bummed when I found out the "self healing" is not in the stealth film but after playing with both the 3M vinyl and the X-PEL film, the X-PEL is WAY thicker and will still do a kick a$$ job of protecting the paint. He's put some on several race cars and has some great stories / pictures of the stuff in action showing what it can absorb.
