Opened up my intake to replace the stock filter after my last off-road trip and found a ton of silt all over the inside of the intake and the throttle body was covered as well. Clearly the stock filter isn’t doing its job. As far as aftermarket air filters go, what has the best filtration?

Check you lower connections to turbo inlet pipes . They have been known to tear or come loose. Also check the stock filter box can be put back together not totally mated on the flanges and have a gap . Happened to me lucky I caught it week later.

I second this...the factory filter can plug completely, and you should still never see any debris in your intake piping or throttle body. There is definitely a leak somewhere.

I’m looking into the volant with the Donaldson powercore 2 filter.

Meant to add that if you are using a conical filter in an “open” housing you can run a pre-filter as well. Have heard mixed opinions on running a pre-filter in an enclosed box.

I've actually seen this, engine pulled enough vacuum to distort the filter, that intake tract was still clean. You have a leak.

None of the aftermarket solutions are going to provide finer filtration, stock seems to be the best deal off road.

I've been using the volant intake with the powercore filter for about 2 years. It is by FAR my favorite.

It doesn't add any horsepower, but damn are those filters amazing.

Previous to using the donaldson powercore, I'd have to bring a new filter for each day of the trip.

since? I still bring a spare filter, but I haven't had to use it yet. I generally just shake it out and it is good to go.

If I let it go for more than 2-3 days in a desert, I'll get an intake obstruction code/warning, but it goes away if I simply shake the filter out.

I find it hilarious that the filters are good for 100K on the street, and that translates into 1000-2000 miles in the dirt. let that one sink in for a second.

OP- I've never had any debris or dirt in the intake piping and certainly not in the throttle body. I agree that if that is the case, you have a leak and need to address it ASAP.
