This looks to be a good solution to the factory plastic drain plug and seems to match the thread type everybody keeps talking about....thoughts?

$50? Meh, I can buy 10 spare plugs for that, I've changed the oil 4 times and haven't broken the plug. Still wish I had a metal pan to use a fumoto. As far as the magnetic catch on it, nice option, nothing says 'sell now' like a big sliver of metal on a drain plug.

I did buy a large rectangular drain pan, I have no issues with oil all over.

knew what to expect, but still got caught off guard.
never changing my own oil again, unless i have this up on a lift.
installed a ronin factory plug, might try again, maybe...

I read the warnings and had the Fumoto on hand when I did the second oil change (dealer did first on their dime @5k). I didn't think it was that bad. Less than 2 Tbsp of oil hit the ground and the majority of that was from the filter. WTF is that thing below the filter since it's not the drain channel it appears to be? I know what to expect now and should have zero spillage when I change @15k which should be about 3 weeks.

FWIW I spilled at least a half quart of my lawn mower and it only holds 2 quarts. I guess I was just expecting way worse.

After my first oil change debacle I swore to do something about it at the second oil change (the second wasn't much better.) I went with a ValvoMax quick twist oil drain because I heard over time the leaver operated ones can fail. If that happened I could say bye-bye to the engine. This one has a redundant system to ensure even if the ball valve failed the cap would not let any oil out with a sealing o-ring. I torqued it to 17.5 ft./lbs. and will put a green witness mark on it so I know it is not working its' way loose over time. Anyway, that is the way I handled it. We will see how it goes at the next oil change.

I use a Fumoto with a rubber hose fitted to it with no issues, ever since I had the horrible experience with spills....

Did my first oil change recently. The draining from the bolt was no problem, but I don't know how people are able to change the oil filter and minimize oil spillage. I wish more cars would do what BMW does and use a paper filter up top that can be swapped out without a single drop of oil spilling.

Did my 1st oil change on my 2019 today. It was in a pain in the ***. The little oil drain plug door should be bigger as oil will spill all over your skid plate (the one right under your sway bars). I wedged a big towel in that area as I did not want oil to get trapped in that area.

Also the access door to the filter is great if you have a lift. When you are on your back, it is at weird angle to the filter. I removed the front skid plate to give myself more access but it was not fun putting it back. GRRRR!

If you have a metal oil pan, do yourself a favor and get the Fumoto F107sx. See pics below. I clocked it at 7 and attached a hose. In this position, there is a hole in the skid plate where you can route your hose. So for my next oil change, I will open the valve and it will go directly into container.

I got the same Fumoto valve and installed it after my first oil change. I almost feel like the version that has the hose nipple pointing straight outwards instead of down would work better. I ended up getting the same version that you have, but noticed that it sits a bit inwards from the skid plate opening.

I do need to get a hose to attach to the valve though. Did you get the official Fumoto hose for the drain plug or did you use something generic?

Agreed! BMW and Mercedes do that. I feel spoiled doing those oil changes compared to this. One side note: The BMW oil filter housing gaskets started leaking at ~125,000 miles and I replaced them. On the N54 engine if you let that leak onto the belt it can slip and be ingested into the crank. Something to watch for.
