GEN 2 Gas Octane Question

Dealer filled mine with 91 when i bought it. I figured that's what was required. I have a 2018. Planned to just keep running 91 since thats what our BMW takes as well and we're used to it.

My 2018 manual says 87 minimum as well. Im running 91 but might try 87 and see if there is much difference.

I have tried a few tanks of 87 and a few tanks of 92 and have not noticed any differences in performance or mpg. Typically 200 to 1000 ft elevation and some li th t towing.

I’ve been using 87 since I got my ‘19. I’m getting 18mpg on the highway doing 70mph and about 16 in town.

The computer says a little better.

also to note, octane booster and even fuel system cleaner products are counterproductive to the gen2 raptors. I would recommend not even thinking about it. both kinds of products will wreak havoc on the fuel system.

Same here, I can get 93 here but it has ethanol so I run Shell V-Power with no ethanol

Whoa, old thread wake up call. I'll bite...
Seat of the pants, higher octane gives better performance, aka acceleration.
MPG may be a bit better than 87 octane.
At elevation use the highest octane you can get, if they offer less than you usually use.
Turbos get plenty of O2 to your engine, therefore no reason to use a lower octane fuel.

It's a turbocharged engine so it has a higher compression ratio. A modern turbo has all kinds of knock sensors and other tech that can let you safely run lower octane fuel by changing timing. opening wastegates earlier, etc. to help protect the engine.

So the Raptor engine can use as low as 87 octane and be protected, you won't kill it. But it'll only have peak performance with a higher octane fuel. Look at tuner graphs with different octane fuel, they are all safe tunes but the output will vary quite a bit, even with just 2 points difference.
