Add me to the list of owners that are getting a buyback on the Raptor :( Truck is still in the shop and they cannot figure out what's wrong. Just got the call back from corporate that my buyback was authorized.

Still deciding if I want a 2018 replacement or go for the 2019. Guess it depends on what I get back on this buyback. Hoping for the best.

For record keeping purposes, here are the rough details of the events:

At approximately 4000-5000 miles began to notice engine and transmission issues (lack of acceleration and harsh shifting). No engine light. Could not pinpoint cause so I drove it for a bit to gather the information I needed to share with the dealership. At some point, I also noticed the remote start was no longer functioning (via FordPass and remote). In addition, I noticed clunk from rear end (which I believe now is a backfiring “pop”). Lastly was the recall notice for the shifter cable.


5/19/18-5/21/18 (3 days)

Finally brought the truck in for the above issues and to verify nothing was wrong. No engine light. Recall was inspected, remote start was fixed (connector/wires were loose – wire repair only). All other concerns were inspected and “let go” as issues could not be duplicated and was deemed “Normal operation”.


6/30/18-6/30/18 (1 day)

Remote start inoperable again. No engine light. Replaced “battery monitor”. Also continued to have the dealer document engine/trans issues still being experienced. Dealer stated they could not do anything without witnessing the issue and to drive it back once the issue occurred.


7/13/18-7/26/18 (14 days)

Remote start inoperable again. No engine light. However, was able to bring vehicle into dealership to duplicate engine/trans issue when it was occurring. Foreman went for a test drive with me and witnessed it to authorize work and investigation on the vehicle. He called it “intermittent lack of power on acceleration”. Initial investigation found a “stored code” that reported low oil pressure. SSM 47407 was performed.

NOTE: I later learned that the remote start does not function when engine issues occur (this ties into the original remote start issues back at the 4k mile mark – and I believe was incorrectly diagnosed previously). Foreman stated there was no loss of oil.


8/8/18-8/9/18 (2 days)

Remote start inoperable again. Engine light is finally illuminated. Right side exhaust cam position sensor replaced. Foreman now states engine oil is low (he personally checked it this time as previous tech was questionable). Oil topped off and placed on Oil Consumption Test.


8/29/18-Present

Remote start inoperable again. No engine light. After about 400-500 miles into oil consumption test, “intermittent lack of power on acceleration” occurring again. Foreman confirmed engine oil looks good and is not sure what is going on with the truck. Few days in, receive a call from service advisor stating they are working with Ford on the issue. Service advisor could not fully describe what was wrong.

I’m saddened to hear this. With only ~5k miles on the truck, it shouldn’t be too bad of a deal. Just be sure to do what is best for you, not what is offered to you. If there are out of pocket expenses, look very askance at the “deal”.

Sorry to hear. There's a TSB? or SSM to replace valve cover with oil consumption on our trucks.

geez man. thats alot of time in the shop in a few months. after that much of an ordeal with 5k miles, i wouldnt go back to a ford. i dont think anything has changed in the 2019 drivetrain.

Yea, I appreciate that. With little guidance or knowledge of what is "fair"...it's going to be a tough call. I'm stuck in a weird situation if I want a '19 as the first deliveries will not be till a few months...and I don't have a second vehicle to wait around in. But I will for sure look out for my best interest and would hate to jump to a different manufacturer because of this experience.

There was an SSM. But honestly, I think they were pulling at straws on that attempt because they have/had no idea what was going on. At first the Ford Engineers stated that the SSM was required as there was low oil pressure but NO consumption. Then after that failed, they decided that there was low oil...so they topped me off. When they did that, I was placed on an oil consumption test. When the issue occurred again, I brought it back, they checked...oil was fine. :confused:

If you are going with another Raptor, I'd surely go with the newest model. Ford changes stuff as they go and we never know about it. If they are finding the root issues with failed '17 engines, a '19 would stand a way better chance of having any "fix" from Ford than an '18 would.
