You guys are not following the narrative. The Gen 1 is an sub 11 MPG gas hog. Lucky to get double digits actually!

Mine averages 13.5 just like my last 4WD truck.

The only typical issue I've seen on my truck is the rack is leaking a bit on one side. Not so bad that it needs replacing yet though.

13-14 electrical system is good- I've not seen any electrical issues whatsoever.

What actually IS a problem with the Gen 1 trucks is the transmission lead frame in the 6R. It just might make your truck shift into 1st gear at 80 MPH for no reason.

I posted last year when it happened...but as far as mpg goes
When I took my trip to Silver Lake Sand Dunes, which is about 100 miles from home each way, I spent most of the time on the highway 80 mph.
I was surprised, but once rolling it got best mileage I have seen.
Dash showed over 16 at times and averaged just about that upon arriving.
With 35's and 4.56s, seemed like once it got moving highway speeds it had an easier time of it.
Just an F.Y.I. and another bit of my experience(s).
My 1996 all stock (O.J.) 5.0/302 Bronco doesn't get much better mileage city or highway really.
