When time comes would rebuilding engine or replacing be cheaper

Depends on what you want.

If you're just rebuilding it to OEM spec (no mods); I would order a crate engine/long block from Ford or a reputable re-manufacturer (Jasper, etc).

Probably replace. But what went wrong, and what's the extent of the damage?

What's your goals/budget for the truck? Stock performance? Itching for a supercharger? Livernois is pocket change for you?

Rebuild is a bit vague, what is wrong with it? I would be looking at pull out long block from a 2020/21 6.2l superduty. Swap your sensors, cams, front dress and have another 200-300k of worry free fun. You can get one dropped at your door for under $5k, that has never even had an oil change. Doing a full rebuild on one of these is going to cost near that with current machine shop prices if you do everything that ought to be done.

These engines are pretty much bullet proof, if you keep it stock and maintain it as per owners manual.

LKQ is the only company currently offering rebuilt 6.2L for Ford Motor Company. The remanufactured 6.2 had some teething problems but the issues seam to be worked out. They purchased ATK several years ago which supply a large quantity of the crate engines you see on Summit and Jegs among many other companies. LKQ is the largest engine remanufacturing company in the world.
Multi-billon dollar company with a pretty good reputation and reasonable pricing.
