Protesters need to stay off the streets, they know the risks, drivers don't expect to see protesters on the street because it's against the law, it's called jay-walking and has been against the law since before time began;

Is it legal to Jay Walk on the street?
Originally, the legal rule was that "all persons have an equal right in the highway, and that in exercising the right each shall take due care not to injure other users of the way". In time, however, streets became the province of motorised traffic, both practically and legally. Jaywalking is illegal in some countries due to the health risks.

A lot depends on the whole body of traffic law. If the pedestrians have the default right of way, pushing forward can be a problem. If the pedestrians must yield to vehicles, another scenario. So, for example if the peds are in a 25mph zone, and have right of way by default, they have a kind of presumption of innocence. OTOH, they’re outside the designated x-walk, which is generally a crime in most places but not enforced.

Of course, surrounding the vehicle is stupid.

It’s an interesting conundrum. Do you get out and ask/tell them to move and risk personal injury, or do you slowly idle forward, most likely incurring wrath and subsequent damage to your vehicle?

How do you seek remedy for such damage? Stop and politely ask for the perpetrator’s information so you can follow up later?

A few states have laws saying you can continue forward, but the ifs, buts and coconuts pretty much tie up any reasonable person.

It’s CNN, I know, but it’s a start for those who are unaware. https://www.cnn.com/2017/08/18/us/legislation-protects-drivers-injure-protesters/index.html

Time will produce the full video, most likely absolving the driver. Until then he will be lynched in the media.
Almost nothing you can do because ****** DA wont prosecute. About the only move you can make is id the persons and sue for damages/vandalism. That would prolly be more than the damage.

Here is a link from a Des Moines news channel. I believe Iowa S.F. 342 has some protection for drivers from civil penalties if their actions were reasonable.
We carefully(they love their speed cameras)pass through that city.

how are you so delusional that you'd block the road and not expect someone to push thru? I love reading the tweets defending the protesters who were "peacefully" surrounding and beating on the dudes truck..

dont block peoples travel and i bet there'd be a lot less people getting run over.
