Have a look at my post in the 'Lets Talk Differentials' thread. Just put on the Ford Performance rear diff cover and I was surprised/disappointed at how dirty the factory gear oil was and how much residue was adhering to the rear cover:

There was just as much on the gears themselves, and I wiped off as much as I could reach, but that still leaves probably 50%+ of the ring gear, all of the input gear and most of the spiders just as they were. Hoping the 1000 mile drain/fill I'm planning will clean up the remainder.

Looks like used gear oil to me. So you can sleep better at night, epoxy a magnet to the inside of the cover, below the fill level.
