Just out of curiosity, what happens when there is a failure with the electric steering?

I assume with self drive 5 years or so on the horizon electric steering will become the norm, along with the gas mileage it saves. Frankly Ford and Chevy whiny power steering has never impressed me, I can only imagine it with the 35" tires!
