I know just barely enough about electronics to be dangerous... probably more like mildly threatening. I'm looking for a way to run a secondary DVD player so that I can install two rear seat TV screens so the kids can watch movies. I've seen the products from Lockpick and NAVTV but I'm very hesitant to completely tear apart the dash on my brand new truck. My past experience is that things never go back together exactly the same and sometimes parts get damaged or broken. I'm looking for an easier way. Will plugging in this adapter to the USB2 and then running wires to the DVD player work?

Nope.

USB ports on SYNC are expecting a "USB mass storage device". That's basically a part of the USB standard for disk drives, which is why USB sticks and hard disks work so transparently from computer to computer without installing a bunch of drivers and nonsense each time. Once SYNC sees an attached mass storage device, it will provide you the ability to play tracks on the filesystem on that device.

I'm pretty sure this type of adapter is going to require drivers on the computer end, which makes this a complete nonstarter. There's about a 0.001% that they provided support for this type of USB connection, but I'd certainly bet against it.

If you just want audio to play over the trucks speakers, plugging the DVD audio output into the truck's 3.5mm line-in jack will "work", although it'll be hideously ugly. I think a lot of DVD setups also use FM modulation, which in my opinion makes everything sound like awful (and for good reason). Probably not going to kill the experience of Finding Nemo on 7-9" screens though.

I think there are videos/detailed instructions for lockpick/navtv online/onyoutube. I'm always concerned about tearing into interior as well. I guess I'd watch those instructions and make certain there aren't any "hard steps" where one needs to be careful with easy-to-break/easy-to-misalign pieces which are oh-so-common in car interiors.

Thanks. I figured it was a long shot. I assume an external hard drive plugged into the USB2 could store movies as well. Would I be able to play movies on the NAV screen from the external hard drive? I know NAVTV will let you play a DVD that's played directly. I just wish the factory system had an output so I could just run TV's from there.

Iceman,

The usb is audio only no video. And unfortunately the only way to get a video output from the sync screen is if it is the separate setup. Some of the vehicles have a screen at the top and thats the only one you can get video out from. Why don't you join in on my group buy? I am sure you can get a buddy to help you do the install. It really isn't that hard. We also have tech support m-f 9-6 est to help you out.

Thanks, Susanne. I will probably do that. I'm just trying to come to terms with tearing my new truck apart. I do have a buddy who I trust and has all of the proper trim tools.
