Just got quoted $5000 to replace a broken valve spring, they're about to check the cylinder and piston but 5k just for the spring. Is this reasonable? This is my first experience with any kind of engine repair.
This is a local shop recommended by a knowledgeable friend, not a Ford dealer

keep in mind that I do not know the answer here and hopefully some more knowledgeable people will chime in.

Upgraded springs from livernois are $550. So based on that I would assume the majority of your quote is labor related.

Things that come to mind. Are they pulling the head to replace any other parts? I’m sure if the heads come off there is plenty of labor there. Probably similar if the front cover is to come off.

That sounds expensive, Ford dealer would do it cheaper as they have the proper tools to remove the valve springs with the head on the engine. SOunds like they are doing more than just one valve spring. I would just get clarification from them. What did a Ford dealer quote you? If its a lot cheaper I would get it towed there. Also remember that these engines are not available right now, so they may be being extra cautious?

They never mentioned replacing all the springs or any other parts, just cylinder #5 valve spring. I forgot to mention the $5k includes a $170 tow bill, but it still seemed like a lot to me. I haven't talked to a dealership because I've been told they can be unreliable at times. I'm fairly inexperienced in vehicle mechanics, I knew buying a high mileage raptor was a moneypit, just want to know if I'm being ripped off. I'll call the shop back to clarify though. Thanks for the input

I'm a technician and although I have not done springs on a 6.2, I have done it on other engines. That price is WAY high,$5000 would be about 30 to 40 hours labour , not figuring in parts. Unless, they are doing other things / repairs.

That’s outlandishly expensive! Here in NY where mechanics are notorious for ripping people off would only charge $2500/$3k maximum. For $5k you might as well buy a low mile motor for $3500-$4500 with a 40k mile warranty and have any mechanic drop it in for around $2500.
If 1 spring went bad, another one can go at any time, and then what? Get charged another $5k!!??!!
Also there’s not much more labor involved replacing all the springs at once since that head is opened up anyway. Maybe 2-3 hours total once they are already in there. The springs themselves are cheap, you are paying 95% in labor (which is fine as it’s a big job) but not $5000 big of a job. Take it ford and let them deal with it. At least you know you’re getting the work done correctly and having them stand behind their work.

Just my $0.02

Any news, what's going on? What exactly are they doing?
