yes they are fake. not a marketing ploy. they always have said "capable". nothing new .. bead locks are illegal to drive on the road in some states if not all. thats why they are capable and can be modified to allow for them to be put on for off roading use. instead of buying all new wheels. pretty smart option if you ask me.

So your trying to tell me the ones on my brand new truck are fake?

Not fake, as mentioned above they are advertised as 'bead lock compatible' (or sometimes bead lock capable). A fake bead lock wheel would just look like it has a bead lock ring, but it would not be a functional ring (ie part of the wheel machined to look like a separate ring).

couldn't find any laws against using bead lock rims on the highway. they're just not DOT approved. Not all accessories you put on your vehicle are DOT approved. Curious, when chip foose CNC's a custom rim, is it DOT approved?
