Then in theory nothing will stop someone from stealing the tailgate. Hell, they could always just steal the truck.

Time and motivation are how thieves operate. They to steal to feed their crack habit. Most break-ins and other thief's happen between 1 and 3am because there are very few people up so they have all the time they need. Proof for this a local Toyota dealership in one weekend lost every cat on all trucks and SUVs. This dealership wasn't open on Saturday so police are assuming they started late Friday night early Saturday morning. BTW do you know how hard it is to sell metal when something like that happens.
