The battery drains over time due to the small but constant current draw while in "sleep" mode and the normal self discharge of SLA batteries.

Thank you for sharing all of those technical details, great read. At 20 months of ownership my battery was toast and had to be replaced. Thankfully they are warrantied for 36 months, mileage means nothing for this component.

I'm surprised that when a new battery is installed- the system needs to be reset with a scan tool. I guess I should start looking for one.
