how long does it take to get a passport?

depends... if you have your citizenship documentation in order less than a day... if you have to go the long route, the better part of a year...

guys, I live in the Baja. There is no problem with driving into the Baja. It is very safe. I would not hang out in Tijuana, but after that it is totally cool. As far as insurance is concerned, there are a bunch of insurance companies just before the border. Definitely stop and get the truck covered for the time in Mexico. It is not that much money, and you can buy a policy just for the time you will be there.
