I have the same exact problem. I first thought it was the 3rd brake light as well and I have replaced with several new lights as well as sealing the light off with weatherstripping and butyl rubber.
As it turns out the issue is with the rear window seal. My window has never been replaced either.
My experience tells me that the new brake light is not going to help you in the intermediate run. The gasket starts out thicker than the one you are replacing but it eventually gets crushed and looks like the old one with the same results. YMMV.
Thanks I will eyeball that area closely. Seems like a lot of water to be leaking through the screw holes though, cause the rear seat gets absolutely soaked.
