Need to shorten my antenna.

I never had good luck with the stubby on my gen1, so opted for the side-cutter route... I cut mine ~3-4" higher than the roofline, so doesn't contact when in my commonly visited garages, but will warn me when we are getting close. I keep body roll to a minimum then ;)

No change in reception with the minor chop.

I did my chop yesterday as well. 4" chopped off, superglued the ball back on and it works just as well as the original. No whack/whack when entering the parking garage today.

Cutting seems to be the easiest method and is free. I noticed no loss in reception.

We have had the 3.2 Inch Stubby for the last six months and it works fine. We rarely use FM however.

Which "Stubby" is everyone recommending? Most of them on Amazon don't get good reviews.

That’s the one I bought and it looks great but reception is noticeably worse. I’ve switched it out a couple of times and living in the country there are two stations I can’t even pick up with the stubby that co e in fine with the stocker. Also HD channels also don’t come in even on the stations that I do get. If you live closer to or in a city it may work fine but not in my area. If you want I’d make you a deal on one.

I don’t pick up my truck until tomorrow, so I don’t have one to do the measurements on yet. I really like the concept of shortening the mast to a couple of inches above the roofline as a low clearance warning device. When I off-road I plan on removing the mast but parking garages are a fear of mine with a high profile vehicle. How much above the the roofline did the 4 inch chop leave you?

just an fyi here. a vehicle antenna is a standard height for a reason. its 31.5 inches long. the reason for that is because its 1/4 wavelength at 1 watt. do the math and it pretty much leaves you dead center of our frequency band. a lot of companies have started going to the amplified antenna, which you see shorter antennas on vehicles, or antennas built into the rear glass somewhere. that being said, theres a bunch of circuitry inside to basically tune to the frequencies we have. theres a reason you can buy a $10 replacement mast but yet have to buy a $400 (or more) amplified antenna module. you can cut your antenna down, theres no issue with that. if you live in a city or metro area, you wont notice a difference since you are so close. but the outlying areas are where you will see a difference in reception. fm is frequency modulation. meaning if you are within range, you will get signal. am is amplitude modulation meaning the higher the am tower is, the farther you will get reception. changing the length of the antenna will affect the range of both. a 50,000 watt am channel will far outreach a 50,000 watt fm channel. if i remember right, i believe you want to cut the antenna in approx 3 inch increments until you get the desired height you want. i may need to brush up on some of the numbers, but this is what im remembering off the top of my head.
