wow! I dont remember having hardly enough room to stick 1 finger between mine.

You are correct. I was referring to my fingers horizontally, not vertically. I was only able to stick my fingers in to the middle knuckle. I ran my hand along the gap and made sure both sides fit the same.

In my case that's equivalent to about 3/4".
