I've spent my fair share of time in the desert. My front is chip free. My rockers and sides are chip free. However, maybe from the top of the mirrors down about 10" in a band around the entire truck I end up with plenty of desert pinstriping (which comes out really well with a good clay wax and polish, by the way). The only real protection I have addes is that I've basically armored the underside of the truck with skids from Hefty. I don't know if anyone else has gone that far, and honestly I don't really know if its necessary, but it sure makes me feel better when handling the occasional crawl, and when they ring at high speeds as the rocks smash off 'em. YMMV.
