How to block front holes on side steps?

hi all.

I bought the husky liner front mud flaps and now I want to figure out a way to block the holes in the front section of the side steps to further block dirt and mud front from hitting the sides.
Anyone have recommendations?

Just spit balling, screen. The black plastic stuff. Or aluminum fine grate material...Home Depot. Gutter screen?
