Its not that bad... and definitely less painful than dealing with any California dealers. I purchased my truck through a dealer in Texas and had a great buying experience. They are almost uncomfortably nice and accommodating and would apologize profusely anytime there was a hitch in the process, which ultimately wasn't their fault.
My dealer went ahead and dealt with registration per my request. I drove for 4 weeks or so without a problem with a temporary Texas plate (No issues). Received a letter in the mail requesting that I get a VIN cert and smog check. Went to DMV with those items and a check for the small difference in sales tax and walked out with my stickers and plates. Also, TX dealer initially sent my Cert of origin with the other paperwork and sales tax so I didn't have to deal with it.
Only had with wait an hour or two max as a walk in at the Costa Mesa DMV since my online appointment option was sometime in 2021. I also recommend asking someone at DMV what the best time to go and not wait is. I got tipped off to go mid afternoon so I didn't have to wait too much time.
Pretty painless and well worth the savings. Good Luck!
Hope this helps.
