    Help w/selecting correct radio equipment

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write such an insightful post. I have been thinking about quality vs cost, which is why I haven't committed to the TYT. I've always liked to spend a little more to get a good product, so I've been looking more closely at the ICOM and Kenwood radios. Luckily my...

Thanks for the insight. I really appreciate it. I'm mulling over my options at the moment. At least now I have a good idea of what direction I want to go.

Not at all. The noise I hear doesn't happen at idle either. Thanks for the vid though.

    Help w/selecting correct radio equipment

So assuming I get the TYT 9800 (Hopefully LVJmotorsports will be helping me with that) I'm thinking the following equipment for the antenna after taking everyone's inputs. Antenna: http://www.theantennafarm.com/catalog/pctel-maxrad-mwb1320s-773.html NMO mount...

You saying get one with a spring in case the antenna hits something?

Now the price difference makes more sense. If a mag mount could potentially get knocked off, I wonder if a lip or tab mount on one of my bed rails would work better. That's why I linked that lip mount in my first post.

I'm pretty much sold on that TYT model. Now I'm thinking about how permanent I want the install to be. The radio will probably stay in the truck since it'll be wired to the battery, but I'm not sure if I should go mag mount on the antenna, or commit to something more permanent. I'm kind of...

Yeah, I noticed that. The pre-programming would be nice. Here's the link to what I was looking at: lvj-motorsports Amazon has the radio by itself at about $220 right now, but that's the radio on its own. No extras. I'll definitely be looking into it.

Ok cool. I was looking at his website last night. That TYT is more expensive on his site then on Amazon, but from the pictures he may be including some additional hardware which accounts for the added cost.

PCI? Not familiar with them. You bring up something I've been going back and fourth with though, which is how permanent do I want it to do be. I would only use it during runs, so I'm kind of leaning towards having it be easily removable like you're talking about. Edit: Found PCI after a quick...

    Help w/selecting correct radio equipment

Thats good advice. That's why I figured I might as well go all the way with this, so I won't have to do it again down the road. Hmm, I looked at the Antenna from the link I posted and under mount type it says "Order separately from NMO style mounts". Maybe I'm missing something? Wouldn't be...

I actually PM'd him a few days ago. I think he may be busy with snoball though. I'm debating whether to wait for him, or just order off amazon.

From what I read it's a universal lip mount, so my plan was to mount it on one of my bed rails. That antenna doesn't require a ground plane, so it shouldn't need to be roof mounted. 6.5ft of cable may not be enough depending on where I mount the radio though. That was a good observation you...

    Help w/selecting correct radio equipment

No worries man. That's why I try and do my homework before I post. I'm trying to go on my first group run in Feb, and I'm going to need a radio. I'm not too worried about the install, but some of the technical aspects of the radios themselves really go over my head. That's why I wanted to get...

    Help w/selecting correct radio equipment

Ok...I used that thread that you pointed out to select the items I placed in my original post. I spent a few hours reading that thread, as a matter of fact. I also went on Antenna Farm and read both the radio and antenna tutorials to try and educate myself. Once I had done all that, I posted...

    Help w/selecting correct radio equipment

I'm thinking about purchasing the following items for my first in-vehicle radio. Robot Check http://www.theantennafarm.com/catalog/pctel-maxrad-mwv1322hd-757.html http://www.theantennafarm.com/catalog/diamond-k400cnmo-4885.html I'd like to make sure all this gear is compatible for typical...

I see you got the 9800. This is the same model I'm considering as my first radio. What other items did you need to purchase to make this all work? I'm very new to this, so any details you could give me would be great. Thanks!

    Whistling sound from engine bay

That's exactly what happened to me. The tech drove with me, and heard the noise. Dealership called me back a few hours later and said the truck was fine. I haven't noticed any performance degradation, but the sound is getting progressively louder, so to me that is not normal.

Now I know exactly what you are talking about. I ripped those bad boys out about a week ago lol. Zip ties have been holding them since. I guess it's time I got get the actual buttons that go in there, and see if it makes a difference. ---------- Post added at 09:14 AM ---------- Previous post...
