USB2 "hack" on Gen2

Hi Folks, Just got a new 2018 Blue (I know am supposed to know the color blue...but don't...so be easy on me)....had a 2011 Black Gen 1. Loved it, but wanted something new.

Anyway --- I did the Gen1 USB "hack" (well documented), but I can't find a similar thread on the Gen2's. I tried to open the screw under the rubber mat in front of the B&O speaker on the dash, but can't seem to figure out what sort of screw (or not) it is.

Any ideas on how to get the screw out? Anyone done the USB2 "hack" on a Gen2. I did a few searches, but came up empty.

It allows you to plug a USB cable into the back of the Sync system (I used it to provide power to a cell phone Qi charger).

I am looking to do the same for my new 2018, but the screw under the mat on the dash seems like a non-screw (or something I have not seen before).

Sorry if I'm missing the point here, but why don't you use the 2 USB ports provided? I also use an Anker dual USB lighter charger in the console to charge other devices.

Yeah... I'm not getting the point either. The truck already multiple USB ports and beyond that, it seems a whole lot easier to get an adapter if it didn't.

I think it is so you can hide the wire and route it behind the dash to somewhere you have something mounted and not have it hanging down to the console. I also saw where people would plug in an ipod and hide it in a glovebox or somewhere else. But the OP will have to confirm.

OP is obviously an OG, because that mod was news to me. I don’t think anyone in Gen2 land would know as this thread seems to bear out.

@Guy has had the dash apart to replace the radio face with 12” of tablet pleasure, maybe he could comment on whether this is feasible on the 17+ ?

IF not, you can just pick up a 12v. to usb adapter. I did this to power my go pro

I believe that is the general idea. Access an unused USB port on the back of the head unit.

Forget a USB hack...how about a hack for an Audio In?
I have a FM/Ham radio to mount in the center console and running the radio calls thru the stereo would be awesome...

No hijack intended...

TXCobra, That is exactly my intent. It is much cleaner to run a usb cable up from the back of the sync module (and I have confirmed there are 2 USB ports on the back of the sync 3 device via replacement photos) than having a wire run from the 2 USB ports on the front or from the center console (via a cigarette plug adapter).

Really appreciate it if someone can explain how they took the dash apart. Thx!
