Hopefully this will help someone out, I couldn't decide if this was best in the exterior section because it was paint or the lighting section because it talks about lights. Move thread if I'm wrong.
Been meaning to post this thread for two weeks now because I got this done and just been busy / sick, but here's what I've done, feel free to copy or change as you see fit.
I had my tail lights and third brake lights smoked with a black paint / clear coat combination I've always referred to as "90-10," which is 90% clear and 10% black paint mixed in a paint gun and shot at a distance and layered to suit for color. Gives the best light output without totally blacking out the lights or looking faded (whatever the hell those terrible spray can Night Shade junk is, I've never used because it's crap). This is UV clear mixed with paint and will outlast the truck - ask me how I know.... This is about the 8th personal vehicle I've had with shot this way with 90-10 not including the 40 or so I've done for customers when I was in the industry. I am NOT a painter, I had an extremely high end shop do this for me as I always do, so don't as me to do yours!
NOW, about those ugly silver screws that hold in the clear third brake light! Remove them, and find you some black ones that are #10 / 24 threads that is 1.5" long. I used Phillips, but you can do better I'm sure, I wanted hex, torx, or something else cool, but this is what I got:
Here's a picture of the lights on:
and here's the tail lights with the parking lights on in case someone wants to see those too (forum keeps rotating this image into landscape but I guarantee this is in portrait on my computer, don't know why it is doing this):
