Hey guys, Since I sold my baby, I was thinking of buying a salvaged Raptor and starting to fix it up. It got me thinking when I spent $17k tearing into mine that I was taking off the good parts, offroading the vehicle, didn't have more money for long travel, and was worried about resale value/wrecking it since the bank owned it. With Fiberglass, modifying wheel wells, suspention angles, larger tires wear/tear, heavy duty rear end, bending hubs, mounting radios/antennas, etc. that I was ruining the value. I would like to start with something that has little value and therefore little to lose on value. My new idea is to get a 6.2 Raptor with a good mid frame section and straight drivetrain and running engine. From there, I can weld in cages, remove truck beds, full cage, jack up the dash, remove air bags, etc. That way it drives straight but has no cosmetic appeal/bumper protection that other people bid on. I am in no rush, but thought if I can get a raptor for a few thousand and work on it in the garage over the next few years and slowly upgrade things until its ready for off-roading, then trailer it out to BLM land or Mexico to offroad it. Not sure about street legal vs importing to Mexico, salvage vs non-salvaged title, public vs private auction (or auction broker buyers), etc. I "snuck" into an iaai private auction today in Placentia and saw some cars going for only a few thousand bucks. I assume the public auction has a lot more stipulations and bidders. I doubt these private buyers would want the same thing I am looking for in a trophy truck build (mid frame/engine with little to no damage, the rest I really don't care about as most will be caged/replaced with fiberglass). This just might be my withdrawals from selling my raptor talking :( Not trying to spend a lot of money, but wouldn't mind having a project in the garage going for a few years as I work on the house. Raptor OEM parts go for cheap since people upgrade, so if I wanted stock parts, I am sure I could find a good deal. Or just go with primer fiberglass, etc. If anyone has any tips, let me know! Thanks -Eric ---------- Post added at 02:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:35 PM ---------- Heres a list of Salvaged raptors from Mercury: All are private, not public auctions. I only found one of these (The $17k fire damage one) on a broker site. How can I bid on these things? Do I have to "know a guy"?
