As someone mentioned before full rpm range is a must in the break in. That's my opinion, I wouldn't use cruise control or haul things either in that recommended break in distance. To each thier own though.

Look for the owners guide for the year you are buying, within the first few pages will have the recommended break in.

In my opinion (mechanical engineer) you did more harm in not breaking in your engine properly than you would by going synthetic. Unless of course you didn't keep a constant speed that 1600 miles, I don't see too many people on the freeway in new cars going from 40-70-40-70...etc. Modern engines...
