Thanks for the input all. Tonight, problem solved. Ford does wire the trailer reverse light signal to the center pin of the 7-way connector. What I didn't know was that all of the trailer light wires are all on their own separate fuse circuits. Yep, here it comes...it was the trailer reverse...

I tested it with accessory on, vehicle in reverse and used a voltage "light probe". Reverse lights and tail lights were on. The pins in the 7 way for tail lights and turn signals tested positive, so the 7-way receptacle does get power even when the trailer plug is not connected.
