Quarantine = time for projects

Replaced the broken number pad. Not as easy as I expected. Programmed and everything works as it should now:

Installed vibration dampening material in the doors while I was in there. Made a noticeable improvement:

Tackled the seat heating elements next. First time fooling with upholstery hog rings. Those are fun. This job wasn’t too bad.

Scorch marks from arcing out:

Foam cushion and underside of seat cover were both charred. Seat back element looked fine. I think the seat bottoms are the failure prone ones.

Next on the docket is to change out all of the fluids and get a spare key made. Hope everyone had a good Easter and is staying safe out there.

182k Update

Happy to report that I've notice a noticeable uptick in fuel economy since replacing the busted IWE's (even with deletes) and wheel bearing.

Recently performed my first oil change as I'm going through all of the fluid maintenance and took her to a dealer for alignment and transmission fluid flush. Very worth it. Shifts buttery smooth now.

Been staring at a new radiator for weeks now waiting on some other parts. Originally ordered just the upper and lower hoses and then realized I should go ahead and get the trans cooler lines while I'm at it. Also ordered the overflow line just for good measure. Was my regret with the A/C service that I didn't go ahead and do the low pressure line while I was at it. Oh well. Every time I've ordered from Tasca, the shipping has been painfully slow. Once I get those last few parts, I'll do a coolant flush and change the parts out.

After that, I should just have the diffs, t-case, PS, and brake fluid left to do and she should be good to go after that. Will probably turn my attention to front end wear parts after that (bushings, BJ's, etc.). I'm knee deep in that work on the Toyota ATM. Good times.

Coolant flush and cooling system replacement went down last Friday. All is good. Mostly drama free job but turned out to be pretty time consuming because of all the stuff you have to get out of the way to yank the radiator out. Worst part was removing the lower radiator hose from the engine side. Not much access to it.

Then on Fathers Day, got up with my Raptor/4Runner buddies and let this big pig roll around in the dirt. Had a blast.

Recently had the window tint re-done by my tint shop in the best ceramic tint they have in hope to help the still sub-optimal A/C system out. 20% all around. Could not have my windshield done at that time because I needed to have a chip repaired before my guy would touch it. It’s since been repaired just need to get her back in there.

Ordered some Morimoto XB headlights and a GJ Motorsports 3rd brake light from @4x4TruckLEDs.com . Thanks Adam for taking care of me.

Headlights came in quickly:

d1d47a93ef8bdfa9e71ac7fb4f9bb0fc.jpg

Still waiting on the brake light. Just over 3 weeks now so we’ll see. Really need that thing because the red LED marker/brake diodes have been toast since I bought the truck but now the cargo lamps are gone too. I checked the bulbs and they ‘looked’ intact so the board could possibly be fried. Either way I believe it’s causing the dash to light up like a Christmas tree now. Service AdvancTrac, Descent Control Fault, and Check Brake System (ABS) it tells me. The lamp assembly seal had failed and was taking in water when I got it but I sealed it up. Still having issues somewhere it seems though the lamp isn’t filling up and I don’t have that moisture on the top of my middle seat any more.

Also had an O2 sensor (bank 1 downstream) start to fail and throw a CEL. Easy fix.

Replaced the air filter.

Have had rear axle oil sitting at home for a while but haven’t had a chance to do the service.

Truck is again currently at the dealer (and I’m not a go to the dealer guy) to have them diagnose why the A/C is still sucking. Especially when sitting still. Decent as long as the truck is moving but not good by any means. Especially compared to our other vehicles. Also having an issue where water just randomly leaks out of passenger dash onto my wife’s feet. Could be related. We’ll see.

Just jotting these notes down. Anybody got any ideas on this stuff I’m all ears.

Yeah GJ is massively backed up now. We have a lot of kits being built for us still (as we usually stock them).

Man I wish I would have known there was a need for it. I would have been glad to give it to you. I'll check this evening, but I'm pretty sure I chucked it. I'll let you know.

Sorry @PorterW1111 no dice on that old number pad. I checked but already knew as at some point my garage started to accumulate too many old junk parts so I resolved to trash as much as can.

Been a whirlwind for me and my boys round here lately. After dealer had my truck about a week and a half, I got it back about ~$2800 poorer, no noticeable improvement, and a new additional problem. Apparently the tech damaged my + battery terminal while working on it so between picking the truck up and bringing back in the morning (livid) I had to jump start it 4 times. So only good thing that came out of it was that I have all new A/C components with a 2 year warranty and a brand new battery. Definitely didn't sway my opinion on dealers. Lesson learned. I did however manage to get a huge improvement on my own for free by pinning the broken air inlet/recirculation door closed.

This blow was only softened by the fact that in this same week my buddy pictured above in the black 4Runner which is fully built broke the cardinal rule of wheeling (went alone) and flopped his truck on probably the hardest marked trail in NC and the other guy above (Black Raptor) did his first tune up and wound up blowing his engine. Made my week not as bad as I thought.

After getting the battery we took the truck to the beach on a week long family vacation against my better judgement. She continued acting up. Driving around in tropical storm conditions seemed to have created an issue with the backup camera. It’s beginning to fail. Screen shows no guide lines, weird color, and mirrored image. Then sometimes flickers black screen. Sometimes will briefly function normally. Ordered a replacement though the Camera Source. Also the ABS acted up on several occasions. It would kick in while braking and go to a smooshy pedal.

GJ Motorsports brake light arrived while gone. Took a while to get and definitely expensive but man what an awesome piece of equipment. Install was pretty straight forward.

Before:

After:

5225a89c24b0af5ea77fea7d29af8cbe.jpg

However after I installed this my key fob stopped working. Jesus Christ man I can’t catch a break with this thing. After troubleshooting a while finally found the blown fuse.

Also all my idiot lights are still on. So it wasn’t the brake light. Did a little trouble shooting before just ordering wheel speed sensors and it appears to be the cheaper of the two rears (driver side). Definitely not what I would have guessed with my luck. Put one on order so let’s hope it does the trick. Might explain the ABS issues I was experiencing.

Finally changed the rear diff fluid. This stuff is expensive! Not much drama here.

2a29549fd8bcba083ecff48f78233150.jpg

Oil that came out didn’t look terrible but the film on the inside of the cover was gunkier than I care for and fill plug magnet was a mess.

8984d486ba960d22a7f303575ef2222b.jpg

I didn’t rotate the ring but from the visible side there were at least two shiny tips on the gear teeth. I looked back through the service history and I believe this truck got an entire new rear axle assembly at some point. But who knows how long it’s been since this service was done and how hard it’s life was.

I let the gasket cure overnight and came out to find a brand new caliper on the 4Runner leaking. Shit part. So I had zero out of two trucks this morning. Good times. But on the plus side, I’ve always felt this low speed bucking that I was attributing to axle wrap but hoped, even though I knew it was a long shot, that fresh diff fluid would help. Well, while it may not have entirely eliminated it, it improved it significantly. So that’s something.

Replaced the speed sensor and camera today.

8ff9c68225269b2431c8cb54d9d05649.jpg

The Camera Source camera is great. Came with OEM emblem (extra). Not the cheapest solution out but cheaper than. OEM and saved like 15% using the F150 forum code. I think the resolution is improved over OEM and install was a breeze.

Wheel speed sensor was also easy peasy however still didn’t clear my dash lights! Instead of throwing more sensors at it I had a shop diagnose it with a proper scan tool and found out it’s the one that came in the brand new hub assembly. Jesus! I’m not normally a ‘Parts Store’ parts guy but in a pinch I do what I gotta do. However after this and the leaky caliper I just replaced again on the 4Runner, O’Reilly is not batting a high average with me.
