Rock guard heat

after backing the tailpipe into a sand berm and tweaking the pipe a bit I was thinking of doing a side exhaust exit with a cool bezel that dirt skum makes.
I think having it above the rock guard might be too high so the question is do you guys think if it got cut into the plasticky material would it damage it or does it not get hot enough?

I've always been a fan of the "Lightning" style exhausts on my trucks. My Gen3 is the first one that I've never done it on.

I had the Lightning exit on my '03 HD. I liked it. Seen some Gen 1s through the bed that looked ok. But you do have a harder time keeping things cleaner with a side exit.
