Refreshing red stripe on steering wheel

Was going to post new question about the stripe on my 2011 gen 1.
Piggybacking here for my 2012. I’m dealing with a spot worn down to the base in addition to general wear. I’m not buying a new wheel, so is the best option to get some filler (maybe mole skin) and then do the red electrician tape?

Won't help fill the hole, but I did recently take a red paint marker to make mine look a little better.
The topside texture looks more like suede than shiny smooth leather, but at least it is solid red color again.
