I've got an 18 and it's burned oil the whole time I've had it, and I did buy new. At first it was about a quart every thousand miles, but since its worked its way down to 1/4-1/8qt per thousand miles. I've just been adding oil and it runs smooth and seems to be completely fine. Doesn't smoke, smell, drip or anything like that. I chose this rather than getting the dealer involved. The reason for that is when I first noticed it they were just replacing whole engines, which didn't seem like a fix to me, as I could end up with my truck in the shop for months and the issue might still be there. Then they started saying it was the valve covers, which it seems like those didn't help you. I'm not saying I'm right, but maybe it could give you some peace of mind, because I'm now at 28,500 miles and all still seems good. It is mildly annoying that I'm having to check my oil every 1000 miles in such an expensive truck though.
