2021 Roush/Alcon Brake Kit Install Experience on 2020 gen 2

seeing that alcon pads are $500, are there any available afermarket replacement pads for these (non-alcon)?

Sooooooo 15k had to replace pads. Driver inside leading edge of pad worn almost to metal backer. Trailing end had at least twice the pad material. On the passenger side, the outside pad wore more quickly yet more evenly leading to trailing edge.

Very disappointing. Most my other experiences were with Brembo big brake kits which wore very evenly as compared to.

Temps here are 107-109 degrees so I did not have the “want to” D l C K around with calipers and see if the leading pistons are smaller than trailing as they should be. Did not “look” that way but invite anyone to correct me on that.

I ended up going with the below Alcon pads:

We will see how they do. Upon bedding, initial cold bite is not horribly, but noticeably less aggressive than the original pads that came with the kit. However, after you get a little heat in them my impressions are that they are fairly comparable. It is not, in my opinion, enough of a difference to ignore the claimed decreased wear and dust. I will comment further on that when I get some real miles on them.

i whole heartedly expect to switch to the Wilwood kit. Even if it lags slightly in performance having pads and rotors at almost half the cost makes more sense for a daily driver IMO. The Wilwood kit was not available at the time I started down this Alcon path.

I will double down on how incredibly in adequate for my use case the OE brakes are though and find it scandalous Ford marketed their pinnacle truck with XLT brakes. Not doing better with the R is however criminal given it’s abilities! Even with my costs incurred, righting that wrong has been well worth it.

Why are you putting Tacoma pads on your Raptor? You trying to give @FordTechOne a stroke?!?

so, it looks like those with alcon kits are stuck with $500 replacement pads every year.

Appears so at this point. I reached out to Hawk who gave the proverbial, "we will look into offering some if there is enough interest". And they would, but I don't think there will be enough people asking. Believe my replacement set was $452.xx with 2nd day air.

I will investigate the Wilwood kit at some point, but won't let the Alcon kit go until I decide which I like better. The less expensive Wilwood entry fee (about $1500 street price IIRC) AND spares are looking attractive. However, a must for me is fitting the OE beadlock ready wheels. I'm stuck on those wheels because I just plain LIKE the way they look.

Another possible plus for Wilwood is, and I have not confirmed this, it looks as though the kit MAY use an OE fitment rotor. The Alcon kit DOES have the advantage of having almost another quarter inch of rotor thickness over the Wilwood kit, but OE rotors would add to the inexpensive versatility for Wilwood replacements. The Wilwood calipers are also direct bolt on. Less to worry/check during routine maintenance. Great brakes has always been an important "thing" for me so I tend to geek out on them. Just remember everything is a compromise. Braking is no different as you generally have to give up something to gain another.

Brakes more important than HP in most cases.

Great brakes and 400hp will be faster around a track than 800hp and shit brakes.

Not to brag per se but my 2002 superduty has SSBC 8 piston per caliper brakes all around (yep 32 pistons), braided steel brake lines. Weight is 2500 lbs more than the Raptor both running 35 in tires and it will stop a shit ton faster. Towing 15k down 6% grade you don't want to question your brakes.

Driving that truck for 20 years and the Raptor for only 1 I am constantly over shooting corners still (both trucks are gray, so look out the windshield is visually similar)

The factory brakes are the most disappointing part of my Raptor after one year ownership.

I have the Roush/Alcon kit and brackets just need time to put them on.
