Ironically the mapping software/program it whatever the Fxxk it is is not off-road friendly and 2 years behind construction that is taking place. Everywhere I go my truck NAV is a blank screen with my bread crumbs. They are always sending me “map updates” to load, oh but the update is $140?? Lol

Just an FYI for everyone. You can purchase an iPad or whatever it's called with the cellular option and not purchase a cellular plan. It's the GPS that comes with the cellular hardware that is needed for navigation.

That is correct. But a separate GPS costs less and can power several devices. I run two Ipads, on for the Navigator and one for me, both powered by the same GPS. Plus I have a third for my RZR, so the additional cost of adding the GPS to each one was a lot.
I am medium tech savvy, (know enough to be dangerous), but even a blind squirrel can find a nut sometime.

Well that’s not what my son law told me. He used to be one of the Apple genius folks at their store.
so if you don’t get a cellular plan you must have to do the hotspot thing with your iPhone? Otherwise it would be like buying a phone, not activating it and trying to use your nav app on it?
John, Did you try preloading the gaia app with maps? I've been using AlpineQuest on my phone for hiking for years and am considering going to gaia for all of the useful layers and because it works with Android Auto. I thought you could load maps at home and then it would work offline. That's how AlpineQuest works.

Like @Chris Mies said above, I believe the device your trying to use has to have the cellular hardware? But does that hardware work without being piggybacked to a device with a cell plan?? Above my knowledge level, Chris can you explain it in non-tech language?
GAIA will work the same way, you have to download that map area you intended to travel in prior to setting out on your adventure. but whatever you download it to has to have a cell plan or a hotspot to work as I found out, when my iPad froze as soon as I left cell coverage. I didn’t try to hot spot it to my phone because I didn’t know to try that until I got home and was informed I could try that.
The problem with using the cellular GPS hardware is I get that lag whenever I’m going faster than 10mph and you can end up missing turns.
I learned to download the maps when I went hiking in Zion and was looking at a blank green screen
I told you, school of hard knocks lol
All I know is the set- up I have now with the stand alone GPS and the devices hooked up to it works seamlessly as intended without the lag in my location I was experiencing in my location before and I now have a 12” NAV screen that I can actually see.

That's so weird, so far there is only one place where my GPS wouldn't work and that is on Vancouver Island, I still don't understand why that is, the nav still works but gps coordinates and search functions wouldn't work, I'm still running the original 2009 update, usually have to use my phone for newer address searches, ha ha. I'm anxious to find out if it works in Mexico or not, figure it should.
