Hello & Wheel Question

I wanted to introduce myself and have a question on my wheels. I bought a 2017 Magnetic Grey three weeks ago. I have been following some of the threads on aftermarket wheels and saw a few pics where people have powder coated their OEM wheels. I am thinking of going that route. I have the base 17" wheels and would do them some type of matte or satin black. Not a gloss.

Anyone done that? Durability issues? Not recommended? My assumption is it is relatively cheap compared to the cost of new wheels and tires (I would probably go with 20" wheels if I changed wheels).

Powder coating is hands down the best way to go about it. Very durable, clean look, and price friendly as long as you have the right guy locally. Where do you live?

Fairly perfect weather. Find a local reputable powder coating company. There's gotta be one in Tampa. Only thing you need to consider is they might need to keep your wheels for a week or two.

Powder coat for sure. Very durable and endless color and finish choices. Your factory wheels will have to be stripped of their current finish. Typically they bead blast them. Unless you have a second set of wheels/tires your truck will be down 1-2 weeks depending on the shop. You will pay the have the tires dismounted and then remounted and balanced. Figure that into your cost comparison.

Powder coating can look good, but I doubt you'll save much coin. I've heard a variety of prices quoted for powder coating but the low end seems to be around $500. I was looking at some wheels at one of the local tire shops, and they ran about $1200. I don't recall the make/model, but they were middle of the road in terms of quality. They weren't top shelf, but they certainly weren't junk either. When you consider that you could probably get somewhere in the neighborhood of $700 for your stock rims, and simply transfer your stock tires to the new rims, it works out to be a wash. Considering the weight and strength benefits of aftermarket versus stock rims, I think replacing them is the way to go. I also know people that have powder coated rims who are concerned every time their vehicle goes to the shop as they're relatively easy to damage.

My truck is Magnetic too, and I also have the stock rims. I asked myself these same questions, so I'm just sharing my rationale.

Just my 2 cents. Take it for what it's worth.

Edit: unless of course you just LOVE the stock wheels and simply want a different color. If this is the case, powder coat for sure. I don't care for the bright finish, but I also think the wheel design itself is just "meh", so replacing makes more sense to me.

Good input, makes sense. Still not sure what I am going to do. I looked at some of the Mickey Thompson wheels and they look pretty good but I am not familiar with the brand or its reputation. I'm new to all this.....I came from a BMW X5 and C7 Corvette so this is a change. A change I wish I had done a long time ago. I love the Raptor. Great truck.
