FYI... sold my iPod classic for $329 on eBay a little over a year ago. I paid $299 for it 10 years ago. Bought a $40 usb drive... stuck the music on it... and forgot all about the iPod

Update. It works now!

There’s no power switch or shutdown in the settings on the old iPod nano. I found a YouTube of the buttons to hold down to reset it and now it plays perfectly again. Menu and center buttons until the apple logo appears. Hope this helps someone.

Did you try resetting the iPod? Did you also try a different usb cable?
This. Try the hard reset...it cures most of my issues. But Sync and a loaded iPod just don't play well together...indexing kills it.

I would start with the cable. Try another cable and see if it works. I’ve had cables power my device but wouldn’t send a signal and vice versa. Apple cables are finicky. Aftermarket Apple cables are even worse.
