Max2893, rooting your phone gives you access to the phone that is denied by default. After rooting my phone, the first thing I did was remove the stupid preinstalled applications. I don't use Blockbuster or Twitter, why do I want those apps on my phone. Some apps require root privileges. I'd say the primary reason to root is to install 3rd party roms. If the issue from my original post gets resolved, you can install a rom that will allow Sync to read your text messages, without relying on the manufacturer to add that feature.

swoop1156, unfortunately I've never rooted a Thunderbolt. HTC has released a root tool for some of their phones, at Welcome to HTCdev, but it doesn't work for the Thunderbolt. I googled and found a bunch of links on how to do it. This one seemed to be a good walk through for a non-one-click method.

My Droid X seems to work fine...the only issue is that it says it failed to send a text when I use sync to send a reply. It sends just fine, just tells me it fails. I can live with that.

I originally posted this a long time ago, but thought I'd update so the information was here in case anyone needed to search for it later.

CyanogenMod now includes the MAP profile for text messaging, but I can't confirm it works (although many others have). I have since got a new phone that supports it out of the box, the HTC Evo 4G LTE.

The only reason I'm posting back is I'm pretty tech savvy and it took me a while to figure out how to get it connected.

Prior to pairing:

On the phone, you have to go to your Bluetooth Settings, then Menu -> Advanced and enable "Message access."

In Sync, go to Phone -> Settings -> Advanced. Here you have to turn "MAP Profile" on. What threw me here is the Advanced settings page doesn't have a scroll bar, but it does have the arrows. On most other pages, the lack of a bar indicates a single page. In this case, there is no scroll bar but the MAP Profile setting is on the third page.

I can only confirm that this applies to the '11. I don't think the '10 supports the MAP Profile (unconfirmed) and I thought the '12+ changed stereos (unconfirmed). '12+ definitely support MAP, but the directions may not be accurate.

I just got my EVO LTE Thursday and couldn't figure out how to get text messages to work with sync. I remembered your post and I had subscribed to it. Thanks so much!

Any way to txt with iphones?

According to this page, iOS6 will add support for the MAP to the bluetooth stack. Until then, nope. Kind of the downside of the closed platform since this is simply a software update.

You can get the iOS6 beta, but I'm not sure how. According to this the third beta release is out, so I would imagine it is pretty stable.
