Hey yall, talked with a dude out of Cali who swapped a full raptor powertrain and electronics into a f100. Has the truck on nitrous and a totally stock motor with slicks and a 6r80 and he’s doing wheelies lol. Anyways what he told me was making the biggest power gain was about 40hp he got in the top end by retarding cam timing with the VCTs. He’s making 430 at the wheels off nitrous in a tune only truck with an unopened motor and stock headers and intake. Obviously he’s on smaller tires and 2wd but still. He said none of the tuners like JDM or 5star tune for cam timing and just throttle response, so I’m guessing HP tuners would be the best route to go to pull that power out of the truck? I guess what I’m asking is what’s the best way I’ll want to go about tuning like that on my truck myself without dealing with 5star or JDM?

I think you'll have better luck in the HPTuners forum. I found a lot of useful information over there.

Thanks. Just don’t wanna make the $400 investment until I know I’m gonna be able to pull some power from it

I have HP tuners on my raptor. I've found a good tune over on the HPtuners forums. Now, i'd like to go in and tweak it for more power output. I've definitely noticed a difference in what i've changed so far.

I use HPTuners more for tuning my transmission. I have it setup to shift like an old school B&M Transpak

I have HPTuners as well. Tuned my high compression 6.2 in my raptor. I too am using the VCT to control Cam timing at WOT to take advantage of retarded cam timing at higher RPM. There is a user over there named Sirius something. He has posted a number of really good base files for the 6.2 Raptors. He turns on a feature called Optimal Power that controls teh VCT at the WOT set point . . . it didn't work reliably on my truck, so i tuned it into the base Map Points at higher load conditions and it works great.

I will say there is a pretty steep learning curve to getting into the software. But, as i said, there are good base files that are very well dialed to begin with. I would do a search over there in the Ford forum for "raptor tuning" . . . don't search for 6.2 or Boss6.2 as not much will show up.

The guys over there are pretty helpful, but it takes a lot to learn their abbreviations and jargon, so just be prepared to invest some time if you actually want to learn how to do all the tuning yourself.

I've been able to tune my truck for 11:1 compression with headers, upgraded to larger injectors, and i'm now tuned to run flex fuel . . . and E85 on higher compression really makes this motor a monster . . . i'm not dynoed, but i'm betting i'm low 400HP at the tires with this combination.
