This past weekend, the Raptor Expedition vehicle RSV 4 took to the trails with a few other Raptor owners for an Explorer run, to pre-run sections for Day 1 of the upcoming Desert Heat run. One thing that we already know from this pre-run... the name "Desert Heat" is fitting to say the least! This route will not only challenge some drivers mentally, but the heat will challenge ALL participants physically! One of the best parts of doing these runs through the area we're travelling through, is the isolation from other enthusiasts. Areas that have been crowded and full of OHV enthusiasts in the past, are now EMPTY leaving the Raptor to explore the wide open spaces from the comfort of your air-conditioned cab!

We left from Anza Borrego at around 8:30AM, before the heat was in full force... although to my 97 degrees at 9AM is still pretty darn hot! The start will be in Borrego Springs, which is becoming an RE favorite due to it's surrounding trail systems and scenery. The other added benefit, is for the folks travelling from San Diego, who don't have to drive quite as far to meet up for the start of the run!

One of the first stops of the day, will be "Font's Point" which is a simply breathtaking view of the Anza-Borrego canyons from a high vantage point. This is a view that few may have seen before, but one you don't want to miss.

From there the trail leads the group through a series of canyon passes, opening into some high speed wash roads. These wash roads are truly what the Raptor was made for! High speeds with minor obstacles, that allow you to push your truck as fast as you desire. Through a variety of washes, the trail will lead the group onto a few of the parks maintained dirt roads, through the Ocotillo Wells recreation area. This area is full of some beautiful scenery and well-groomed roads, allowing for a relaxing cruise through the area.

From there, the group will take a short stretch of Highway 86S, on their way south towards Westmorland near the Salton Sea. In Westmorland, the group can top off with a splash of gas, and refill on liquids! The group will depart north from Westmorland, towards the Salton Sea recreation area.

The Salton Sea recreation areas are basically no longer used... once the water level dropped, many of the once popular areas have become abandoned, leaving behind what looks like a ghost town in some instances. One particular area that we will stop for a group photo, is what appears to be a once popular boat lunch and picnic area, which has clearly been vacant for years.

It's visiting places like this that really make you feel like you're in a whole different part of the world... there's a bizarre and mysterious feel to the entire Salton Sea area, and surrounding cities, that can only be appreciated by exploring some of these areas. The route then takes us to the next oddity, which is very rare to see anywhere else in the world! The Salton Sea bubbling mud pots, where hot grey mud literally bubbles up to the surface, forming large volcano-like mounds of mud. If you're lucky, you can actually approach one of these pots and see the large pools of mud right in front of you.

From there, our route takes us through the small and depressed town of Niland, California... which is now the current home of Leonard Knight, who is responsible for building what has been deemed "Salvation Mountain" where the group will make its next stop. Salvation Mountain is one of those things you have to see in person, to really appreciate the time and sacrifice that one man has made for the past 30+ years of his life. Literally sculpting the whole mountain out of clay and paint, working by hand! A quick group photo will be taken before moving on.

From there, we travel through Slab City, which was made famous by the movie "Into the Wild". Hippies and tax-dodgers call this city home, which has been deemed "The last FREE place" by its inhabitants. This ex-military property has many concrete foundations poured, which was perfect for settlers setting up their new camps, which they have made home!

Travelling north from Slab City, we will be driving a tight high speed section of trail, on the way to the Bradshaw Trail. This section is extremely fun, with few obstacles over the first part of the trip through the mountains you will see in the distance ahead. Narrow bush passages, winding through washes and canyons, with challenging yet beautiful terrain. Personally, one of my favorite trail sections in Southern California.

After a series of wash crossings and caution-filled stretches of trail, we will find ourselves on the Bradshaw Trail, heading west towards the sea once again. The Bradshaw Trail is a well maintaned dirt trail that crosses east-west from the Salton Sea, all the way to Arizona. This is one of the ORIGINAL trails that connected San Bernardino, to the gold fields in Arizona many years ago!

It is still maintained to this day, and is an extremely enjoyable section of this route. This trail section parrallels an active military bombing range, where you can actually see some evidence of the test bombs that have been dropped over the years.

After the Bradshaw Trail, the group will be finding it's way into a high-speed wash section our run, heading southwest towards the sea. This section is fast-paced with few obstacles. Time permitting, there are beautiful canyon passages to explore, with some great photo ops thoughout the area. The final leg of the run for Day 1 finds the group running parrallel to the Coachella Canal, heading northwest towards Indio. These canal roads seem very easy and basic, but must always be driven with extra care! The drop offs on either side of these groomed roads would surely come with great consequence!

After hitting the pavement once again, the group will be led on a short highway drive up to Indio, which will be our stopping point for Day 1. Hotel information to follow very soon! The pre-run of Day 2 will be happening in the coming days, so stay tuned for more information... should be a GREAT run.

Final preparations are underway for the event this weekend. RSV-1 hit the trails this past Saturday to pre-run the final legs of Day 2, and found some great trails for the group. Also, the run will most likely be ending at the Slash-X off-road tavern near Barstow, so the group can unwind and have a few drinks and some food, for those that decide to stick around.

This run is going to cover some of the widest variety of terrain we have EVER covered in 2 days, literally a sample of every type of terrain Southern California has to offer.

Here is what the group can expect:

- Soft, Sandy Wash
- Flat, High-Speed Wash
- Breathtaking canyon overlooks
- Narrow Canyon passages
- Hard-packed dirt trails
- Narrow winding trails
- Low-speed rock crawling
- High-speed graded roads
- Scenic highway drives (Through Joshua Tree Nt'l Park)
- Bizarre landmarks (Salvation Mountain, Bubbling Mud Pots, Mine shafts, etc)
- Pine Forest trails
- 8000+ foot elevation change (-200 sea level @ Salton Sea up to Big Bear)
- Flats, Whoops, Dry Lakes, and more

Going to be one awesome route, with a few stretches of highway between sections to calm the nerves and see some great sights. Looking forward to seeing everybody this weekend!
