Do you really need to get a licences if your just using it out in the dessert to communicate with other truck in your group?

I mean if you want to get real technical none* of these radios are legal to operate on FRS/GMRS bands, so your only legal options would be a licensed business band or ham band. It should also be noted that none* of these radios have the correct type classification to legally be operated on a business band.

There are a couple of exceptions to these but not many.

Yes. For the same reasons that you have to register and insure your Raptor, even out in the desert. Commercial users pay to use certain frequencies and amateur operators are assigned certain bands. How would you like it if someone else was talking on your cell phone frequency/phone number?

If you want to use a radio to talk to others, get FRS radios or CB radios, they do not require licensing.

Does anyone know what magnetic mount they used at the raptor assault program? Is it just a generic magnetic mount or what? I don't want to screw into my dash or use a mount if possible I really liked the air vent setup in the raptor assault program. I liked it so much I got a similar kenwood radio in my truck lol.

First 6/8 of the list on the first post of this thread are the most important (out East at least) but may as well do them all if your radio can handle it.

I’m thinking I may just get an Icom from Keith @lvjmotorsports that is all programmed and ready to go. Is it difficult to do the programming? He did mention that he does a mod to the radios he sells.

Every radio is different. Some can be done on the fly, some need to be hooked up to a computer.

That is exactly what I did. Happy with the Icom I bought from Keith at LVJ. I highly doubt you want to do the modification yourself. If you buy from Keith, he can and will preprogram any frequencies you like before he ships it out. Tell him what groups you run with or events you plan to attend.

That said, programming a few frequencies later on is not that difficult if you are savvy with technology. I recently added a few frequencies to mine based on knowledge gleaned from the manual and a YouTube video. I definitely wouldn’t want to program 100 different frequencies that way, but a handful is no big deal.
