I would work from the source down to the speakers vs the other way. As the others pointed out, you will only hear poor quality sound, the speakers are usually the last to determine whether the sound is bad, first remove distortion and give ample power, then fine tune the speakers. I have a 17 also with Sony, and i'm following this guy

Looks like I'll leave it stock then, because like I said in the original post, I do not want to do a full system upgrade.

I just don't care enough about it to sink money into it. If I'm going to blow that kind of cash, I'll just put it in the long travel fund. lol I'll enjoy that way more.

like i said earlier before everyone told you to upgrade the entire system...... a set of speakers will give you a bit more clarity, but not volume. so if thats all you want, a cheap set of speakers will work. while most people do the entire upgrade, its dependent on what the person wants. if only doing speakers, theres no reason to spend a whole lot because you wont get the full potential of what the speaker can do, so keep it cheap. sound treatment in the door is up to you, but just remember, if you decide to do more, you will need to replace the speakers once again.

The biggest and only real improvement for the $$$ that you can do without a full upgrade is to install the block-off plates in the doors. These will improve your mid-bass, reduce road noise, and will not break the bank. As others said, speakers will be minimal by themselves. Here is a link to those plates and you can read through the 35 reviews to get an idea.

This thread is hilarious. "Hey, I want to go fishing for flounder. Well, you're gonna need a 40' center console with quad 400s. Once you've dropped a million bucks you can try to catch one..."
To improve my stereo, the first thing I need to do is go back to the stock exhaust. Don't know any details, but the owner before me did a resonator delete with 5" tips and I can't have a conversation on the phone in the damn truck.
